UY Series Torque-Arm Mounted Worm Gear Reducer

The UY Series is a shaft-mounted, torque-arm-restrained worm gear reducer with keyed hollow output bore for coupling-free installation on driven shafts. 7 sizes (50-135 mm), ratios 5:1-60:1, torque up to 690 N·m. Pendulum mounting absorbs misalignment and vibration. Ideal for conveyor head-shaft and vibrating-feeder drives. Replaces Bonfiglioli VF-EP/TAS and Sew-Eurodrive SA..TA torque-arm worm reducers with matching bore and arm geometry.

Description

UY Series Torque-Arm Mounted Worm Gear Reducer

The UY Series is a shaft-mounted, torque-arm-restrained gear reducer built for installations where no rigid base plate or machine frame is available to bolt a conventional foot-mounted reducer. The hollow output bore slides over the driven shaft, and a single torque arm or reaction strap prevents the housing from rotating — creating a pendulum-style mount that inherently absorbs misalignment, thermal expansion, and vibration. This makes the UY the preferred right angle worm gearbox for conveyor head-pulley drives, agitator shafts, and crusher roll drives where the driven shaft is the only available mounting reference. Seven frame sizes from WP50 to WP135, ratios 5:1 to 60:1, and output torques up to 690 N·m cover the majority of shaft-mounted drive needs.

Where Torque-Arm Mounting Excels

Conveyor Head-Shaft Drives

Belt conveyors in quarries, distribution centres, and grain terminals often lack a rigid platform at the head pulley. The UY slides onto the head shaft, a V-belt from the motor drives the input pulley, and the torque arm bolts to the nearest structural member. This eliminates the motor base, coupling, and alignment work, cutting installation time in half compared with a traditional foot-mounted arrangement. Equipment integrators for Fenner Dunlop and Rulmeca conveyor platforms regularly specify the UY in the WP80–WP135 range.

Vibratory and Oscillating Equipment

Vibratory feeders, shaker screens, and oscillating conveyors impose cyclic shock loads on their drives. A rigidly foot-mounted reducer transmits these shocks into the housing bolts and bearings, accelerating fatigue. The UY’s pendulum mount decouples the reducer from high-frequency frame vibration, extending bearing life and reducing maintenance intervals. A rubber-bushed torque arm further dampens peak shock loads.

Specifications

Values apply at 1,500 r/min input. The UY uses the same WP-platform gear pair and bearings as the full single-stage speed reducer gearbox range. Hollow-bore diameters match the KA and DKA models per frame size. contact us for torque-arm dimensioning and mounting templates.

Design and Construction

The UY housing is a one-piece grey cast-iron casting with a machined hollow output bore (H7 tolerance, parallel keyway) and a torque-arm lug cast integrally into the housing wall. The input side carries a solid shaft with keyway for belt or coupling attachment. All internal components — 20CrMnTi worm shaft, ZCuSn10Pb1 bronze wheel, tapered roller bearings, double-lipped NBR seals — are identical to every other WP single-stage model of the same frame size, maintaining full parts interchangeability.

Components and Spare Parts

Every wear component inside this reducer is available as an individual spare part from our Condell Park, NSW warehouse, enabling targeted replacement rather than full-unit swap. UY components are cross-compatible with KA, DKA, DA, and all other WP single-stage models of the same frame.

Customer Reviews

★★★★★

The UY torque-arm mount let us bolt the reducer directly to the saw-frame. No base plate, no foot pads, just the arm and two bolts. Frees up floor space and keeps the drive compact.

We integrate the UY into our shrink-wrapper using the torque-arm reaction. It hangs off the drive shaft and the arm stops it spinning. Compact and easy to service.

Replaced an old foot-mounted reducer with the UY on our vibrating feeder drive. The torque-arm mount absorbed the vibration better than the old rigid foot base. Running smoother.

Lubrication

Use ISO VG 220–320 EP gear oil. Because the UY may oscillate slightly on its torque arm during operation, verify the oil level after the first hour of running and top up if needed. First change at 100 hours, then every 2,500 hours or annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What makes the UY different from other WP models? +
The UY is designed primarily for torque-arm (pendulum) mounting rather than foot or flange mounting. The housing hangs on the driven shaft and is restrained by a torque arm, making it ideal for shaft-mounted drives where no rigid base is available.
2. Does the UY have a hollow output shaft? +
Yes. The UY output is a keyed hollow bore that slides over the driven machine shaft, similar to the KA Series. The torque arm reacts the housing torque to a nearby structural member.
3. What frame sizes are available? +
Seven sizes from WP50 to WP135 cover the most common torque-arm-mounted drive applications.
4. Can I add a motor flange to the UY? +
The standard UY uses a bare input shaft for belt or coupling drive. Contact our team for motor-flange adapter availability.
5. Is the UY suitable for high-vibration environments? +
Yes. The pendulum mounting inherently absorbs misalignment and vibration better than a rigid foot mount. A rubber-bushed torque arm further dampens shock loads.
