O-X Series Vertical-Output Worm Gear Reducer

The O-X Series groups two vertical-output options in one foot-mounted worm gear reducer: O-type (output upward) and X-type (output downward). 13 sizes (40-250 mm), ratios 5:1-60:1, torque up to 3,025 N·m. Belt- or coupling-driven input. Self-locking above 30:1 for passive load holding. Replaces Bonfiglioli VF-O/VF-X series and Motovario NMRV vertical-output worm reducers with interchangeable foot bolt patterns and shaft tolerances.

Description

O-X Series — Vertical-Output Single Worm Gear Reducer

The O-X Series groups two complementary output orientations under one product platform: the O-type with the output shaft pointing vertically upward and the X-type with it pointing vertically downward. Both are foot-mounted, belt- or coupling-driven, single-stage worm reducers built on the same cast-iron WP housing used across the entire range. Thirteen frame sizes (WP40–WP250), ratios from 5:1 to 60:1, and output torques up to 3,025 N·m make the O-X a practical right angle worm gearbox for hopper gates, vertical conveyors, tilting tables, and any drive where the load axis is vertical and the motor must be positioned off to the side.

Vertical-Drive Applications

Hopper and Bin-Gate Drives (O-Type)

Grain bins, ore hoppers, and fertiliser silos use slide or butterfly gates at the discharge point. An O-type reducer drives the gate screw from below or beside the bin, with the output shaft pointing upward into the gate mechanism. At ratios of 30:1 and above, the self-locking worm gearbox characteristic holds the gate at any intermediate position. Equipment integrators working with Schenck Process and Buhler hopper systems commonly use the WP80–WP135 O-type for this purpose.

Overhead Conveyor Drives (X-Type)

When the motor and reducer sit on a platform above the conveyor, the X-type positions the output shaft downward to drive the head pulley or sprocket below. This overhead layout keeps the drive assembly clear of floor traffic, product spillage, and wash-down water. Frame sizes WP100–WP175 cover the speed and torque range most overhead belt and chain conveyors need.

Performance Specifications

Values below apply at 1,500 r/min input under continuous duty. The O-X shares identical gear geometry and efficiency with all other single-stage WP models. The input shaft accepts belts, chains, or couplings from any standard speed reducer gearbox motor drive configuration. contact us for frame-specific dimension sheets.

Design and Build

The O-X housing is the same one-piece grey cast-iron casting used throughout the single-stage WP range, with foot pads machined on two perpendicular planes for flexible mounting. The output shaft exits through the top face (O) or bottom face (X) of the housing, sealed with a double-lipped NBR oil seal. The input side carries a solid shaft with keyway, supported on tapered roller bearings, protruding horizontally for pulley or coupling attachment. All internal components — 20CrMnTi worm shaft, ZCuSn10Pb1 bronze wheel, bearings, seals — are interchangeable with the DA, KA, DS, and every other single-stage variant of the same frame size.

Components and Spare Parts

Every wear component inside this reducer is available as an individual spare part, allowing targeted replacement rather than full-unit swap. Our Condell Park, NSW warehouse stocks parts for the complete range and ships across Australia and New Zealand. All internals are shared with the DA, KA, DS, DKA, and DKS single-stage models. A single spare-parts inventory covers every shaft and mounting variant in the WP single-stage family.

Worm Shaft

Case-hardened 20CrMnTi alloy steel, thread-ground to Ra 0.8 μm finish

Worm Wheel

Centrifugally cast ZCuSn10Pb1 tin-bronze, hobbed full-depth involute profile

Bearings

Tapered roller bearings handling combined radial and axial loads on both shafts

Seal & Gasket Kit

Double-lipped NBR oil seals, housing gaskets, breather plugs, and O-rings

Internal components and spare parts available for individual order

Worm shaft, bronze wheel, bearings, and seal kits — all orderable separately

Lubrication Notes

When the output shaft points upward (O-type), verify the oil level covers the worm-wheel teeth fully. When it points downward (X-type), the standard fill mark on the sight glass applies. Use ISO VG 220–320 EP gear oil for temperatures up to 40 °C. First change at 100 hours, then every 2,500 hours or annually. Keep the breather plug above the oil line and clear of dust accumulation.

Customer Reviews

★★★★★

The O-type vertical output was exactly what we needed for our hopper-gate drives. Foot-mounted, belt-driven, self-locking at 40:1. Simple, rugged, and it just works.

★★★★☆

We run three X-type units on our cullet conveyor lines. The downward output lets us drive the conveyor head shaft from above the frame, keeping the motor off the floor and away from glass dust.

★★★★★

Specified the WP80 O-type for a vertical label-roll dispenser. Compact, quiet, and the self-locking holds the roll at any tension position. Customer is very happy with the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between O-type and X-type? +
O-type: the output shaft points vertically upward. X-type: the output shaft points vertically downward. Both use the same housing casting and gear pair — the only difference is the mounting orientation.
2. Does the O-X Series include a motor flange? +
No. The O-X uses a bare input shaft for belt, chain, or coupling connection. For a motor-flange version with vertical output, see the DO Series (output upward) or DX Series (dual horizontal output).
3. Can I use the same unit in both O and X positions? +
Yes. Simply rotate the housing 180° on its foot pads. Adjust the oil-fill level to suit the new orientation and verify the breather plug sits above the oil line.
4. What is the maximum output torque? +
The WP250 frame delivers up to 3,025 N·m at 60:1 ratio with a 1,500 r/min input.
5. Are the O-X worm wheels interchangeable with the DA or KA? +
Yes. All single-stage WP models of the same frame size share identical worm wheels, bearings, and shaft seals.
